2021 Summer Fashion Predictions

Do you remember when everyone was wearing chevron and neon colors? The mid-2000s are coming back in a big way- so ditch the 90s revival wear and break out your Ke$ha CD and get ready to relive high school.

Crochet Everything

Slip dresses are sooo last year, it's crochet's time to shine.

Crochet dresses are lightweight, warm and since they are hard to mass produce they are usually one of a kind.

During winter, we saw a rise of crochet sweaters and for the summer we are going to see a lot of crochet dresses.

Bonus: they are beginner friendly, so even if you've never crocheted before- this would be an easy project.

Alexandria Masse (aka mangopinkdragon) has made a tutorial and pattern for the dress that I recommend if you are looking to make this dress yourself.

Platform Flip-Flops and Sandals

Since alternative fashion is falling out of the mainstream, I think platform sandals are a good transition from Demonias back to wedges. They are super cute to wear poolside, as well as, out of the town with all your girlfriends.

It's a subtle mix of club clothing and "beach wedges" perfect for any person, of any subculture. I think we can expect to see hoards of teenage girls walking around in these in a couple years after they fall out of fashion.

Sheer Sweaters

You'll remember these if you were in middle or high school during the mid-2000s, the only difference is now they are in a knitted pattern versus zebra print.

Once again, these are absolutely perfect for a beach day or just a hot summer day. If you are a man (or masc. presenting), I would recommend wearing this without anything under, accompanied with tight pants (maybe some bright colored vinyl pants)

I think sheer clothing like this is a nice way to be sexy and somewhat conservative at the same time. Plus, who doesn't love light weight material.

If you are an experienced knitter, I believe these would be relatively easy to make for yourself, if you are interested in that kind of thing.

Sheer Tank/Corset Tops

Yes, Sheer clothing has made it on this list twice, but you can't deny how cute it is! I think sheer tops is a great way to reintroduce the layered tank top look of the mid-200s with a modern twist. Corset tops were really popular last summer but are slowly dying out, and adding a sheer element I think is just the next step of this trend before its completely over.

Patterned Mini Skirts

“skirts should be the size of a belt.. life’s short, take risks” - Paris Hilton

Everyone is dying for a chance to break out a mini skirt this summer, but not as willing to bring back the "skank" culture from the early 2000s.

Patterned mini skirts is a great way to evolve from the patterned maxi skirts from the past 3 years, and modernize mini skirts.

Tennis skirts are out. Patterned mini skirts are in.

Sets on Sets on Sets

I know what you're saying "but Gwyn? clothing sets have already been in and out of fashion" and I will tell you, BUT NOT LIKE THIS. I'm talking patterns, ruffled shirts and skirts, built in whale tails- the whole nine yards.

I also think sets are a lot more plus size friendly depending on where you buy it. Sets are often a lot more accessible to a mass audience with a variety of different colors and styles based on your own personal preference.

If you are interested in buying a set, I would look for fun, colorful patterns, unique designs and light materials for the summer.

Wide Leg Trousers

Once again, I think wide leg trousers are a great transitional piece for the recent fallout of mainstream alternative fashion. There isn't much to say other than, they are more fashionable than sweatpants and more comfortable than jeans. They come in a variety of styles to fit your personal taste and go perfect with almost any kind of top.

Wide leg trousers also look nice on almost any body type, masculine or feminine.

They are comfy, cute and gender neutral.

Accent Purses

Chunky layered necklaces are falling out of fashion and fast. A new way to accessorize is accent purses/purses made out of weird items.

It brings back the idea of a clutch in a new personalized way. Accent purses can be anything ranging from a telephone to a chicken to a stuffed animal.

Its a great way to express your personality and give your outfit an extra pop

This is more so a guide for me to follow for this upcoming summer. I also wanted a lot of the things included on this list to be plus sized friendly and accessible for a wide audience. A lot of these items you can make yourself or buy from small businesses.
