The Perfect Mortal Kombat Movie

Mortal Kombat came out April 2021 and preformed incredibly well- being the most viewed movie this year on HBO Max, beating out Zach Snyder's Justice League and Godzilla v. Kong. Although it preformed amazingly, I had some quarrels with it so this is how I would've made the best Mortal Kombat franchise.

I will be referencing a lot of things from the movie so I recommend watching that before hand to avoid spoilers. I will also be basing all this on the continuity and storyline of the Mortal Kombat games 9-11. There will be a graph including a visual explanation for everything I mention below.

1) Cole

In the movie, Cole is a self insert character who is irrelevant to the story. I would have switched his character out with Takeda. For those who don't know, Takeda's father Kenshi is a longtime friend of Scorpion. After Kenshi is killed by Shang Tsung, Scorpion adopts Kenshi as his own. Kenshi also follows under the rule of Raiden and is close friends with Kung Lao and Liu Kang- which would explain Scorpion's alignment with Raiden in the film.

2) Shang Tsung and his underlings

Shang Tsung is an evil sorcerer who follows under the rule of Shao Khan. In the movie, his underlings include Mileena, Nitara, Reiko, Sub-Zero and Kabal. Without any knowledge of Shao Kahn and his relationship with his daughters- it makes no sense to include Mileena into this story. I believe Mileena should've been replaced with Tanya. Tanya is a ninja who follows the rule of Shao Kahn but has so deep connection to anyone's backstory so I feel she would've been a better choice. As for Reiko and Nitara, neither of them have been in a Mortal Kombat game in over a decade, I think Noob Saibot would've been a better choice than Reiko (Noob Saibot is Sub-Zero's older brother who was killed by Scorpion and was brought back to life) and I think Skarlet would've been a better choice instead on Nitara (Skarlet is a new character, but has similar powers to Nitara and is the bodyguard of Shao Kahn).

3) The Plot

I think with the character changes i made the plot of the original movie should stay about the same, but instead of focusing on Cole's story- they should focus on Kenshi's relationships with Liu Kang and Kung Lao as well as going into more detail on what the tournament is.

For a sequel, I think the main villain should be Shao Khan. The story would then introduce Kitana and Mileena and show the development of Kitana betraying her father and joining the good side- then finish with Liu Kang being the champion of the tournament and saving Earth Realm.

I really have no critiques for what they do with the special forces characters such as Jax, Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage. In every Mortal Kombat I've seen, their subplots usually flow well with the rest of the story and really could be added in anywhere.

That being said, I enjoyed the movie a lot and I think it delivered all the fan service we wanted to. I was just bitter because Kitana is my favorite and i feel like she always get snubbed. If you have the ability to watch the movie you should- and I'm sorry if this whole article to you was just a convoluted mess but it had to be said.
